But I do want to call special attention to this quote, attributed to Athens area Congressman Broun in the initial Associated Press article:
“We can’t be lulled into complacency,” Broun said. “You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential of going down that road.”Hey, I'm not comparing Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler, I'm simply introducing the concept of Adolf Hitler as a basis for comparison to Barack Obama.
UPDATE: Blake's got a piece out of Athens with Broun defending his comments:
U.S. Rep. Paul Broun's fear that President-elect Barack Obama might take Americans' guns and use a new national security force to declare himself dictator, as Hitler did in Nazi Germany, is a legitimate concern, the Athens Republican said Tuesday.I remember hearing about a football coach who designated one of his assistant coaches to just walk by him on 4th downs and dissuade him from going for it.
He'd just walk by and say, "Punt the ball, coach."
Maybe politicians need someone to just stick their head in the office every couple of days and say "Don't compare anyone to Hitler today, Congressman."

This is so ridiculous. The peaceful transition of power has never been an issue before. So all of a sudden it will be since Obama is President? That guy is an idiot and an embarrassment to the state (although not as much of an embarrassment as Westmoreland). Boy we sure no how to pick Congressmen around here!
You folks from Georgia sound like a bunch of wackos. I've never been there and I think I'll steer clear of there. Good luck with Congressman Broun. What a douchebag!
Name-calling. How mature.
What I find sort of funny about Broun's argument is that he says it's dangerous that Obama might have an armed force that answers to him. As commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces, Obama will already have one, last I checked. This became an issue in Nazi Germany because the Germans were not ALLOWED to have an Army after World War 1. I have been disgusted at how no media reporting on this have bothered to provide a couple paragraphs of historical context to show what the heck Broun is talking about, or thinks he is talking about. THey just let him throw these statements out there with no check from easily verifiable history.
Well, he's done it again ... with his new Year of the Bible bill - says he: it has nothing to do with religion but is an important document that was important to our countries early foundations "including providing the basis for our freedom of religion" ... WHA? The First Amendment was 'borrowed' from the Commenwealth of Virgina - which included the 'freedom of religion' clause because the Baptists and Catholics didn't trust each other. Read a book dude.
